Once, when Merlin was but a young boy, he found solace beneath a mighty oak near the quiet Priory where his mother tended as a nun. This oak was no ordinary tree-it was ancient, wise, and full of secrets whispered by the wind through its gnarled branches. Merlin, already touched by magic, felt a deep bond with this oak, as if it held the heartbeat of the earth itself.

One day, a friend brought him grave news: the sacred oak was doomed to be cut down. Wrath and sorrow stirred in Merlin’s soul, and with a voice both fierce and mournful, he cast a powerful spell upon the tree. "When Merlin’s Oak shall tumble down," he proclaimed, "then shall fall Carmarthen Town."

Through centuries, the oak stood proud-witness to history’s turning wheel. Carmarthen, cradle of magic and legend, bore witness to Merlin’s rising wisdom. It was near here that Merlin’s uncanny gift first revealed itself, leading him before King Vortigern. From beneath the king’s fort, Merlin unleashed two dragons, locked in eternal combat-the fiery red dragon of the Welsh flag triumphing in a dance of flame and fate.

The oak, like Merlin’s magic, endured through storms and strife. Though whispered poisons sought to claim it in the 19th century, it clung stubbornly to life, a sentinel of the land’s ancient power. But by the 1970s, the mighty tree was declared dangerous, and at last, it fell beneath the axe’s heavy blow.

Nine years after the oak’s fall, terrible floods swept through Carmarthen, as if the land itself mourned the loss of its guardian. The old prophecy echoed anew in the hearts of the people, reminding all that magic and nature are woven deeply with the fate of men.

Today, fragments of Merlin’s Oak rest in quiet places-the County Museum at Abergwili, and the Civic Hall-silent witnesses to a legend that refuses to fade. And in the heart of Carmarthen, among the bustling shops of Priory Street, a wooden carving of Merlin stands tall-his gaze serene and knowing-watching over the town that still whispers his name.
